people or system

I went for a brief walk this afternoon to get out into the beautiful weather and enjoy the city a bit. As I was walking home a nice lady asked me if I knew anything about the immigration issues that have been a major focus lately. I shared a bit and after a little back and forth about a protest tomorrow and a walk out on May 1st she asked me what I thought of socialism.

"There some great ideals there", was my reply.

"Well would you be inerested in joining our socialist non-profit organization?"

"Um, no thanks I'm already part of a somewhat organized group and in fact some of us will be at the demonstration tomorrow"

"Oh, what's the name of you group? what are you about?"

"We're about relationships with people through which we try to share compassion/care and help in developing life skills, and aiding people to self organize and find health in all aspects of their life"

"Hmm, well would you be interested in buying one our newspapers to support us?"

I left immersed in the complexity of social problems, is it the system that needs reform or the people? I wondered about Jesus, it seems like he was killed because he didn't overthrow the system. People wanted the messiah to bring in an earthly kingdom and overthrow the Romans. Instead it seems like the invitation is to live the dream no matter what system you're under, first lose your life, "overthrow" yourself to him and the rest might fall into place.

This somewhat relates to another thought I've been having - the good that has come in my life is because God's story and love have been working out in it. All the good came about because of him -
