belonging. we all want it, search for it. in middle class america w/ our geography of nowhere is it possible? our neighborhoods are full of houses of individuals our social compentencies severely lacking. where is the sandlot we can walk to? where is the coffee shop w/ our neighbors? where is the local watering hole? we fill our time w/ work, w/ activities, leaving no time for community. we suppress the innate desire w/ stuff, whether material or otherwise.
Community takes sacrifice, takes committment, takes boundaries. Less work, simplification of life. organic order, collaboration only works if those collaborating, if those trying to create order are present w/ constant interaction. if the feedback loop is too long, the response time too large the order is lost. so in our nature of schedule, of mobility we look for places to plug into, an existing place that takes no re-ordering of life, that allows us to unplug just as easily as it was to plug in. it's our american dream come true. and we're left wanting.
